Marie Berry
GYC Board Member

Marie is a Ph.D. student in the Sociology Department at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). Her MA thesis examined the political empowerment of women in Rwanda after the genocide, and her dissertation explores the effects of mass violence on women´s grassroots mobilization efforts in Rwanda and Bosnia-Herzegovina. After graduating from the University of Washington´s Jackson School of International Studies in 2007 with degrees in International Studies and Political Science, she traveled to Rwanda as a delegate on GYC´s summer 2007 delegation. After returning from Rwanda, Marie served as the Speakers Bureau Coordinator for the Washington State Holocaust Education Resource Center (WSHERC), and worked with other GYC alums to found and run the Umubano Sister School Program. In 2008, she returned to Rwanda with GYC as the Special Program Assistant, and in 2009, while in Rwanda conducting fieldwork and interviews with women in Rwanda´s Parliament, served as a facilitator for GYC´s summer human rights learning community. Since beginning her studies at UCLA, Marie has been actively involved with anti-genocide efforts as an academic and an activist. In 2010 she joined the Board of Directors of Global Youth Connect.
